Kentucky, flown over. McCracken County, in glass.

Your television opens on Kentucky as the rock lies, then lights every road to all 120 county seats. It flies to the Jackson Purchase and down into McCracken County, where 35,194 parcels rain down as glass and this year’s sales land on their dates. Then it rests, and the county’s heart beats green and red.

What you’ll see

The opening, as it plays on an Apple TV in McCracken County. The words in the dark are the TV’s own captions.

  1. Welcome to Kentucky

The state as the Kentucky Geological Survey draws it: six regions, their own shapes across county lines. Light runs in from the state line, and the geology fades into the 120 counties. The rock was here first.

  2. Kentucky, 1792

120 counties between the Ohio, the Mississippi and the mountains. The camera leans back, points of light stream along the roads to every county seat, and the rivers drift on their current.

  3. The Jackson Purchase

A glide west to the Purchase: 8 counties in four colours, the rest of the state dimmed.

  4. Welcome to McCracken County

Down to the county, its ground gone dark. Every road pours in, from the county line to downtown Paducah, in four seconds.

  5. McCracken’s parcels · January deeds

35,194 parcels fall as glass, downtown first, then spreading, while the camera circles the county. The year’s deeds land on their dates, with ripples, crowns, beams and sparks. Top right, the money: every sale price added as its deed lands, rolling up to $236.9M, transacted.

  6. This County’s Lit.

It comes to rest, north up. The 220 parcels that sold for more than last time beat green, the 11 that sold for less beat red, once every 1.2 seconds. Net change: +$34.5M.

The voice

A voice carries the opening, forty seconds of it, timed so its last line lands just after the last of the glass, with the green and red already beating.

Watching from somewhere else?

It opens on Kentucky the same way, then circles the state while McCracken rises out of the ground as glitter, and rests on Kentucky, lit, the counties gathered into their six regions. The remote takes you down to McCracken from there.

Every county’s roads

Drive into any of the 120 counties and its every road pours in. McCracken’s parcels are in; the rest arrive as each county’s property valuation office sends them.

The remote

Three levels, one remote: the state, a region, a county. Any press takes over from the opening.

  2. 2

    Click

Goes in: Kentucky, then a region, then a county. Each one gets its own flight, its lean back and its full circle.

  3. 3

    Back

Up a level. From the whole state, Back takes you home.

  4. 4

    Play/Pause

The opening again, voice and all.

  5. Leave it be

Two minutes at rest and the opening plays again, quietly. The screen stays awake while it’s open, so it’s at home in a lobby or a waiting room.

The details

Your Apple TV

Apple TV 4K, with tvOS 18 or later. It runs smoothly even on the very first Apple TV 4K, from 2017.

No account. No ads. No tracking.

Open it and it plays. There’s nothing to sign up for, nothing to buy inside it, and nothing counting you.

Your location stays on the TV

It asks once, to greet you by your county. An Apple TV knows roughly which town it’s in, from Wi-Fi; the app checks that against the counties it has parcels for, on the Apple TV itself, and keeps nothing. Say no, and it says Hello Kentucky.

Ready when you are

The opening plays the moment you open the app, internet or not. Online, drive to any other county and its every road arrives as you get there. Nothing about you goes along.

The record, as art

Shapes, light and colour. No owner’s name and no mailing address ever comes on screen. The dollar figures are this year’s deed prices, which are public record.

Privacy and support

What every Taxr app keeps, and what it doesn’t: privacy. A question, or something not right on your TV: write to us.
